Chromatic Immortals Vol. 1

Chromatic Immortals Vol. 1

The Detail

The light doesn't just sit on the surface - it seems to emanate from within the plumage. You can see how the different feather types react, with soft downy patches catching a gentle glow while the rigid, structured quills refract the saturated hues with sharp, clean intensity. This reveals an incredible depth of detail, transforming each bird into a tapestry of texture

The Technicolour

In Chromatic Immortals Vol. 1, the macabre is not merely observed; it is set ablaze. Instead of digital manipulation, the vibrant color is captured entirely in-camera, using pure, raw illumination, the collection utilizes high-octane, saturated color to strip away the dullness of death. The vibrancy is intentionally aggressive, creating a luminous, high-fidelity presence that mimics life so closely it feels almost alive

The Manifesto

Beauty is often most compelling when it is uncomfortable.
In this collection, the macabre is dressed in technicolor, as taxidermy birds are transfigured into specimens of aesthetic perfection.
The collection captures the provocative, unsettling feeling of observing something that mimics life so closely it feels almost alive.

My work should evoke the human urge to watch, to linger, and to find a strange, quiet ecstasy in the "off-limits."

I want you to feel the weight of your own looking.

The Substrate

Each work is rendered on museum-grade Hahnemühle Photo Rag. This matte cotton substrate is chosen for its sculptural weight and ability to absorb pigment with profound depth, ensuring that the vibrancy of the captured light remains undiminished - an archival vessel for specimens intended to endure.

The Presentation

Mirroring the methods of historical scientific preservation, every print is float-mounted to hover within its frame. By suspending the work above the mat board, we create a soft, lingering shadow that invites a sense of three-dimensional depth. This is not merely a border, but an extension of the enclosure - transforming the frame into a quiet, reverent specimen.

Architect of the vivid macabre

The Artist

For over a decade, Kelsie Barley has meticulously framed the structural precision of interiors and the intentionality of architectural spaces.
Chromatic Immortals Vol. 1
marks her debut transition from the built environment to the fine art sphere, where she now turns her lens toward the visceral stillness of the natural world.
Based in Auckland, New Zealand, where she resides with her family, Kelsie brings a seasoned technical rigor to this new body of work - transforming the taxidermied avian form into a series of saturated, high-contrast works that defy their static nature.

"The intoxicating colour, the intrigue: every feather impossibly vivid, every detail heightened to the point of hyperreality. The birds appear alive –  until they don’t. It is in that moment of hesitation somewhere between attraction and discomfort that these works reveal themselves"
- Clare Chapman HOME Magazine

"Kelsie has long understood how light can shape our perception of space. With this collection she applies that same mastery to a subject that is infinitely more provocative, asking not simply what we see, but why we cannot look away"
- Clare Chapman HOME Magazine
